With UMRU (unrest), Detroit-born, Hamburg-based songwriter and Yiddish troubadour Daniel Kahn concludes a trilogy that began with his solo album Word Beggar in 2021, continued with The Building & Other Songs in 2023 in a duo with legendary New York fiddler Jake Shulman-Ment, and now finds a worthy and powerful conclusion in a trio with Christian Dawid (clarinet, saxophone, and percussion), also a long-time companion in Painted Bird.
The pieces for the album are traditional or contemporary, translated or newly composed by Kahn. In addition to pieces by Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Tom Waits, Ewan MacColl, Stephen Foster, and Georg Kreisler, there are traditional pieces and two compositions by Daniel Kahn. These are ballads of a resilient diaspora that undermine artificial boundaries, tear down flags, lament oppression, and celebrate freedom - delicate, lost, fragile, cheeky, and explosive. The album is thus a call for “Radical Yiddish Autonomy,” Kahn's term for the robust, independent Yiddish culture that stands up transnationally against fascism and violence.
