ORIENTE Berlin Edition OBECD800
Together with the Cultural Office of the Berlin borough
of Neukölln, ORIENTE Musik has released in its Berlin Edition series
the CD "Neukölln, wie hast du dir verändert" ("Neukölln,
how you have changed"). This CD tells about Berlin music history by focussing
on music in Neukölln (named "Rixdorf" until 1912) - not the lofty
music of the Temple of Art, but rather the music of petty bourgeois and
proletarian Berlin, with its rich entertainment culture.
All the tracks on the CD have been taken from
original recordings which are historical documents of an almost forgotten
music culture. Many are also reminders of jewish musicians, wiped out by
the National Socialists. Their role in Berlin music history can be glimpsed
in this Edition, which exists thanks to the initiative, the collector's
passion and the wide-ranging knowledge of Raymond Wolff.
Like in real life, where tragedy and joy exist
side by side, on this CD the original version of the well-known pop song
Capri-Fisher, by the Rixdorf composer Gerhard Winkler, follows Jewish
Death Song, written by the composer and choral director Rosebery d'Arguto
(Martin Rozenberg), who was murdered in Auschwitz.
