Media Aetas: LI TURCHI VIAGGIANO

The 'Wandering Turk' of the title has traditionally signified a non-European 'other', whether it be cultural or musical - composer Roberto De Simone takes the theme and constructs this timeless exploration of transition, both temporal and metaphysical. Using his Neapolitan roots as a musical backdrop, the company ('Media Aetas' is translated as 'Middle Ages') produce a quite sensational mixture that veers from madrigal to modernism at the drop of a fool's hat. The compositions of the 70-year are marvellously interpreted by the 19-strong string, brass and percussion ensemble who appropriately, given the ambiguities of the composition, rehearse in a psychiatric clinic in Naples.
